Since opening in November 2024, Daisy's Dog Stop has become a favourite with local pet owners looking for quality products, knowledgeable advice and a friendly welcome. The independent shop stocks everything from everyday essentials to more unusual products that customers might not find in larger chains, and keeps its prices competitive. What customers notice first, though, is the atmosphere: relationships matter here, dogs are greeted with treats and customers quickly become familiar faces. For the owner, who has spent more than 15 years in the pet industry, creating that kind of shop was always part of the dream.

Turning a lifelong love of dogs into a business

The shop may be young, but the experience behind it goes back much further. Over 15 years in the pet industry, including several years managing a large independent pet shop, the owner learned which products, services and personal attention pet owners value. As a devoted dog lover and championship show judge, she also understands the different needs of dogs, from everyday care to finding products that suit particular breeds, sizes and requirements. When the chance came to open her own shop, she wanted to combine that experience with a personal approach, offering a broad range of quality products, including items people struggle to find in larger chains, while keeping them affordable.

Just as important, she wanted Daisy's Dog Stop to be somewhere people enjoy visiting. That means greeting customers with a smile, taking time to give advice and making sure the four-legged visitors get some attention of their own, usually with a treat. It is a simple approach, and it has shaped the character of the shop and the loyal customer relationships the business values so highly.

A personal shopping experience for every dog

Every dog is different, and what suits one may not suit another, so the team takes time to help customers choose the right food and accessories and to make sure a coat fits comfortably. A popular addition is the dedicated coat and harness room, set up to make fitting accessories more relaxed. Rather than leaving owners to work out sizes on their own, the team helps find the best fit for each dog, and there is a comfortable sofa where customers can sit back while they do it. The aim is a happy customer and a dog with something suitable and comfortable to wear. The shop is also proud to be inclusive, catering for dogs of all shapes and sizes, large and small.

Knowing customers personally is an important part of running an independent business for the owner, and over time many of those relationships have turned into friendships. As she explains, customers don't stay just customers for long. They become cherished friends and part of the Daisy's Dog Stop family.

Helping dogs feel their best

One of the most rewarding parts of the job is using her knowledge to help customers whose dogs struggle with food allergies or sensitivities. The owner knows the problem first hand: she has a dog of her own that she fondly describes as being “allergic to life.” Having seen how distressing it is to watch a much-loved pet suffer, she takes particular satisfaction in helping other owners in the same position. The shop stocks foods with alternative and less common protein sources, and by helping owners identify and avoid ingredients that may be causing problems, Daisy's Dog Stop has helped many customers find better options.

Every dog has individual needs, and dietary allergies can need a vet's guidance. But someone who understands the problem and can explain the products available makes the process far less overwhelming. The biggest reward for the owner is seeing a dog come back into the shop happier and more comfortable after a change of food, and watching a pet start to feel like itself again reminds her why she opened the business.

Building something special against the odds

The owner is the first to admit that nothing quite prepares you for running your own shop. Despite her years in the industry, being responsible for every part of a business brought a new set of demands, and in the first year unexpected problems seemed to arrive one after another, calling for determination, flexibility and a lot of hard work. Like many independent retailers, the shop also trades at a time when high street businesses face constant pressure and little support. As she puts it, despite everything the business has faced, “we have come out the other side still smiling!”

The shop has improved steadily since it opened, from a revamped shop front to a wider range of products in store, each change bringing the original vision a step closer. Asked to name the milestone she is proudest of, she finds it almost impossible to pick one: every improvement, new customer and relationship is a reason to celebrate. Most of all, she is proud of the community that has grown around the business and the loyalty of the customers who have helped it grow.

A pet shop at the heart of Gnosall

The team values being based in Gnosall. The owner speaks warmly about the Staffordshire village's community spirit, the way people support one another and take pride in where they live, and Gnosall was recently named Overall Winners of Staffordshire in the Best Kept Village competition. With so many dog owners living locally, it is a natural home for the shop, and the owner is grateful for how warmly the village has taken to it.

The business gives back too. It has organised charity afternoons, most recently for Breast Cancer Now, bringing people together while raising awareness and money. It also stocks products from nearby makers, including candles and tote bags, which supports other independent businesses and gives customers something a little different. For the owner, the village's busy calendar of events, its friendly residents and its strong local identity are what make it special, and the support shown to the shop has strengthened her belief in shopping locally and keeping independent businesses at the centre of their communities.

An emotional moment as Daisy's Dog Stop wins Pet Shop of the Year

Being named Pet Shop of the Year was an emotional moment for the owner. After putting so much time and energy into the business, finding out that local people had voted for the shop was overwhelming, and she admits there were a few tears when the news arrived. She describes Daisy's Dog Stop as her passion, and knowing that customers value it enough to nominate and support it means more than she can easily put into words.

The award means all the more because the business only opened in November 2024. In that time the owner and her team have worked hard to establish the shop, build its range and create the welcoming atmosphere customers appreciate, and recognition from the community shows that effort has been noticed. She sees the award as belonging to the customers too. Many have watched the shop develop, backed its improvements and kept coming back, which is why it feels like a shared achievement. She hopes it will also encourage people who haven't yet visited to come and see what makes the shop different, where new visitors can expect the same friendly welcome and personal attention as the regulars. For the team, the award confirms something they care about: when customers support a local independent business, their loyalty really does make a difference.

Looking ahead

The owner is keen to keep developing the business, welcome new customers and make its products easier to buy. One ambition is to add online purchasing to the shop's existing website, which at the moment does not let customers buy products directly. For now, the focus stays on the in-store experience and personal service. The team wants to grow its customer base while keeping the friendly, familiar atmosphere existing customers value, and one of the great pleasures of the job is seeing familiar faces return, often with equally familiar dogs, alongside meeting new people and their pets. For the owner, success means more than expansion; it means a shop that customers enjoy visiting and are proud to support.

A heartfelt thank you

The owner is clear that the award would not have been possible without the people who have supported her. Her first thanks go to the loyal customers whose encouragement has driven the business's growth. Every visit, recommendation and vote has helped make the shop what it is, and she is touched that so many people took the time to show their appreciation. She also thanks Julie and Rachel, who keep the shop running when she isn't there. Having a team she can trust completely matters enormously to her, and she describes knowing the business is in safe hands as priceless.

Her friends and family have been a constant source of love and encouragement throughout. She thanks her husband JP for embracing the adventure with her and supporting what she fondly calls his slightly crazy wife, and her children, who have apparently accepted that their mum making slightly bonkers videos on TikTok is now part of everyday life.

To her customers, she says: “Thank you for believing in me and thank you for your continued loyal support. You mean the absolute world to us!”

Daisy's Dog Stop is looking forward to welcoming even more two-legged and four-legged friends through its doors, with plenty more treats along the way.
