Distinktion, an independent tattoo studio in the centre of Rugby, has been named Tattoo Studio of the Year for its thoughtful, personal approach, which is all the more remarkable for a business that only opened towards the end of 2024. The studio brings together a small team of tattoo artists and piercers who share a love of creative work and of looking after customers. Each artist has their own style and strengths, so the studio can offer bespoke tattoos that reflect the personalities, tastes and stories of the people who wear them. Whether someone is thinking about their very first tattoo or is an experienced collector planning the next piece, the team wants them to feel welcome, understood and well looked after. The studio is still young, but the support of customers and the wider community has already made a remarkable difference.

A tattoo studio everyone feels welcome in
The idea behind Distinktion was simple: the owner wanted to create the kind of tattoo studio they would enjoy visiting themselves. After years of being tattooed in different studios, they knew the atmosphere can shape someone's experience as much as the finished artwork. Getting a tattoo can be exciting, but it can also feel intimidating, especially the first time. A warm greeting, answers to questions and an artist who is really listening make all the difference, so Distinktion was set up to offer excellent tattoos in a place where people feel relaxed and confident.
The owner was closely involved in every stage, from transforming the premises and developing the studio's identity to bringing together a team of talented artists and piercers. Just as important was making a place where artists enjoy their work, develop their own styles and feel supported. There has been plenty to learn, and the owner readily admits there is much more they would like to achieve, but watching the studio grow and seeing real relationships form with clients has been very rewarding. The studio still follows the thinking it started with: good tattoos, good people and somewhere everyone feels welcome.
Personal tattoos and a studio that puts comfort first
One of the studio's strengths is the range of styles within its team. Different ideas suit different artists, so the team takes time to understand what each client wants and matches them with the artist best placed to bring it to life, which helps customers feel their ideas are understood and given proper attention. Free consultations let people talk through designs, ask questions and raise any worries before committing, and the team is clear that nobody should feel embarrassed about asking questions or being unsure.
Small touches make appointments more comfortable. A private tattoo room is available at no extra cost for anyone who would prefer it, blankets are on hand for clients who feel chilly, and there is a shower for anyone who needs one during a longer session. Distinktion also offers professional body piercing in the same friendly setting. For the owner, success is not about becoming the biggest studio. It is about being somewhere people feel cared for, enjoy spending time and want to come back to, which means remembering the little things, getting to know clients and recognising that the experience around a tattoo can matter as much as the design.
Growing through word of mouth
The owner is proud of how far the studio has come since opening towards the end of 2024. Much of that growth has come through word of mouth, with customers recommending Distinktion to friends, family and others looking for a welcoming place to get tattooed or pierced. For an independent business, every one of those recommendations is someone who enjoyed their visit enough to send somebody else. The studio has kept building its team, taking on new artists and piercers and offering apprenticeships to people starting out in the industry, and helping new talent gain experience and develop is something the business finds particularly rewarding.
There have been notable achievements along the way. In 2026 Distinktion won Best Tattoo Studio in Warwickshire at the England Business Awards, became a national finalist and was then voted Best Tattoo Studio in the West Midlands. For a studio in its early years, that recognition was both surprising and much appreciated. The owner is quick to say the awards are only part of the story, though. What matters most is that clients have had good experiences, come back for more appointments and supported the business with their recommendations and encouragement. That loyalty has helped Distinktion establish itself in Rugby and given the team the confidence to keep developing, and it shows that a successful independent business depends on relationships strong enough that people want to see it succeed.
Pulling together when things don't go to plan
The studio has already had one day the team is unlikely to forget. A power surge caused an electrical fire, and after hearing an enormous bang the owner went to investigate while Nina came running with the fire extinguishers. It was not the kind of excitement anyone expects in a tattoo studio. The fire forced Distinktion to close temporarily, disrupting the team and customers who already had appointments booked.
Everyone worked together to keep things moving. Calls and messages were answered from home, clients were kept informed and appointments were rearranged while the studio was shut, and when it reopened, members of the team came in on their days off to fit in customers affected by the closure. For the owner, it showed how much it matters to have a team willing to support one another and find solutions when problems cannot be prevented. The patience and understanding shown by customers meant a great deal too, and for a business still learning, the episode underlined the importance of teamwork, communication and the relationships it has already built.
A special connection to Rugby
Being in Rugby is personal for the owner, because of the building itself. Before it was a tattoo studio, the premises were a jeweller's, and it was there that the owner's grandparents bought their wedding rings. That family link was one of the reasons the building was chosen. The original jeweller's safe has been kept as a reminder of the building's past and its connection to the owner's family. Where people once chose jewellery to mark special occasions, artists now create tattoos that often carry deep personal meaning of their own.
Being in the centre of town has also helped the studio build strong ties with the local community. The owner is grateful for the kindness and encouragement people have shown since it opened, especially as so much of its growth has come from their recommendations. For Distinktion, Rugby is a place with a personal history and a supportive community, and part of the story of the business.
Giving something back to the local community
The support Distinktion has received from people in and around Rugby has encouraged the team to help local causes where it can, and although the studio is still young and small, the owner sees community involvement as important. It has donated tattoo vouchers to local charity raffles and sponsored customers taking part in fundraising challenges, supporting causes that matter to clients and the wider community. Nina has been raising money for the OurJay Foundation through her Pokémon gumball machine tattoos, combining her love of Pokémon-inspired designs with support for a local charity that works to improve access to lifesaving defibrillators.
The studio's apprenticeships are another way of contributing, giving people at the start of their careers the chance to learn from experienced artists and gain practical knowledge of the industry while building the studio's own team. As the business grows, there may be more chances to take part in local initiatives. For now, the focus is on helping where possible and thanking the community that has made Distinktion feel welcome from the start.
Tattoos that carry memories
People choose tattoos for all kinds of reasons, but some of the most moving appointments at Distinktion are with customers who want to remember someone they have lost. Memorial tattoos are deeply personal, and the team understands how much trust it takes to ask an artist to create a permanent reminder of a loved one. For some, it is also their first tattoo, bringing a mix of nerves, emotion and uncertainty, and an artist who listens, understands what the design means and helps them feel at ease can make it far more reassuring. The studio has met many people with touching stories, and those appointments have stayed with the team. Seeing someone leave with a smile, sometimes with a few happy tears, is very rewarding.
For many people a tattoo stands for a memory, a relationship or a moment they want to carry with them, and being trusted with something that personal is a responsibility the team does not take lightly. These appointments are part of why the owner wanted Distinktion to be such a welcoming and understanding place. When someone feels comfortable enough to share their story, the artist can approach the work with a fuller sense of what the finished tattoo means, and being part of those moments is one of the greatest privileges of the job.
An award win for a young independent studio
Winning Tattoo Studio of the Year was an emotional moment, given how recently the business opened. Having launched towards the end of 2024, the owner could hardly have imagined celebrating recognition like this less than two years later, and competing alongside other talented, established studios made it feel even more special. The first reaction to the news was surprise, excitement and a great deal of gratitude.
What made the award mean most was that it was decided by public vote, reflecting customers who had taken the time to show their appreciation for the studio and their experiences there. Distinktion was created to make people feel comfortable, welcome and well looked after, so having clients recognise that is very encouraging. The award also celebrates the team's hard work, creativity and dedication, including the everyday effort customers may not see. The owner hopes it will introduce Distinktion to people who have not yet found it and reassure anyone thinking of booking a tattoo or piercing, since choosing an artist is an important decision. For the team, it is encouragement to keep learning and improving.
Plans for the next chapter
The team has plenty of ideas for the future. Work is under way to turn the studio's basement into extra working space, giving the business more room to grow and develop its services after already taking on new artists and piercers. The owner and Nina are also working together on a clothing brand, a chance for two people with a strong interest in creativity and individual expression to try something new alongside their work at the studio. The team would like to start attending tattoo conventions too, where the artists could meet others in the industry, share their work and gain new experience, an ambition that fits a studio that values each artist's development. The business is taking things one step at a time, letting its plans develop as opportunities come up, and the owner is the first to say there is still plenty to learn and achieve.
Thank you to everyone who has supported Distinktion
The owner's first thanks go to the studio's customers. Whether someone came for their first tattoo, returned for several more, booked a piercing or simply recommended the studio to a friend, every bit of support has helped the business grow, and even smaller gestures like leaving a review or sharing a social media post have made a difference to an independent studio still finding its feet. The owner also thanks the team, whose creativity, commitment and care are central to Distinktion, from producing individual designs to helping nervous customers relax. And thanks go to everyone who voted in the awards. In an industry full of talented artists and excellent studios, the team will never take that support for granted.
Getting to know the people who walk through the door has been one of the best parts of running the studio. There have been stories, laughter, nerves, emotional moments, happy tears and, by the owner's own admission, probably far too many cups of tea. The owner is clear that none of the studio's success would have been possible without the encouragement and trust of its clients.
“So, from me and everyone at Distinktion, thank you for being part of our journey. We really are incredibly grateful.”
As it grows, the studio is sticking to the idea it opened with: good tattoos, good people and making everyone feel welcome.
