Gravitas Web Design, the Birmingham-based agency, has been named Web Design Business of the Year at the local business awards for its thoughtful design and long-lasting client relationships. Founded in 2008 by Darren Langley, Gravitas has spent nearly two decades helping businesses present themselves professionally online, with a full service that covers bespoke websites, branding and ongoing technical support, shaped around each client's needs. What sets it apart is its focus on relationships. The team does not deliver a website and move on; it stays on hand long after a project launches, so clients have experienced people they know and trust. For Darren, that comes from the values that have guided the business from the start: authenticity, transparency, approachability and positivity.

From London's digital industry to Birmingham
The business began in 2008 as Darren Langley Web Design. Before that, Darren worked in London as Web Design Manager for Sky TV, building experience in the digital industry. He was born and raised in the Birmingham area, though, and always knew he wanted to come home and build something of his own. After moving back, he set up a web design business to bring what he had learned in London to companies across the West Midlands. The timing was far from ideal: he launched just a few months before the Global Financial Crisis, which he now calls, with a laugh, “great timing!” It was a hard introduction to running a business, but he stuck with it and kept supporting his clients.
Over the years the business adapted to changes in website technology, customer expectations and the wider digital world. In 2024 Darren Langley Web Design became Gravitas Web Design. The name was chosen for the qualities the agency helps its clients put across online: seriousness, wisdom and authority. For Darren, the rebrand was about expressing the purpose of the business more clearly and the importance of professional websites that inspire confidence, and the original aim of helping businesses succeed online has not changed.
Websites that reflect the businesses behind them
Gravitas works on the principle that no two businesses are alike, so their websites should not be either. Every company has its own personality, priorities and audience, and rather than fitting clients into standard templates, the team takes time to learn about each business and build a site that suits it. That starts with listening: understanding what a client does, what makes it different and how its website can get that across to the people it wants to reach. From there the team creates a professional online presence that supports the client's goals and helps it build trust with potential customers.
A website is rarely a standalone part of a business. Branding, consistent design and ongoing support all affect how a company comes across online, so Gravitas offers services beyond the initial build, letting clients work with one team that knows their business across their whole digital presence. Its responsibility does not end when a site goes live either. Ongoing support is a big part of the approach, giving clients someone familiar and approachable to contact whenever they need help, and for many business owners that dependable relationship is worth as much as the website itself. The agency's values of Authenticity, Transparency, Approachability and Positivity shape how the team communicates as well as the work it produces. For Darren, doing good work and treating people well have always gone together.
Developing talent and investing in the next generation
Some of Darren's proudest achievements are the opportunities the business has created for others, and he puts real weight on supporting new talent through training, mentoring and practical experience. Emily, the agency's in-house designer, joined Gravitas as an apprentice straight from school and learned directly from the team. After completing her first apprenticeship she kept building her knowledge and qualifications, and she is now in the third year of a degree apprenticeship with Sheffield Hallam University while working full-time for Gravitas. For Darren, watching someone go from leaving school to a professional career with higher-level qualifications is worth celebrating, and it shows what practical experience, encouragement and structured education can do together.
In an industry where technology, design trends and customer expectations keep changing, learning new skills matters. By supporting career development, Gravitas invests in its own future and in the people who contribute to its success. Darren counts having a strong team around him among the most important factors in getting through the challenges of running an independent agency, and that belief in people remains part of what the business is.
A website for one of London's most prestigious hotels
Of all the agency's projects, one stands out. In 2013 Gravitas designed the website for The Ritz London, one of the world's most prestigious hotels. For a business set up just five years earlier, being trusted with the online presence of such a well-known name was a significant milestone. Darren remembers it fondly: the research involved visiting the hotel and even staying there, “all in the name of research, of course!” as he jokes.
The Ritz London site became one of the agency's proudest designs and showed the level of work Gravitas could produce for a business known for prestige and quality. For Darren, projects like this bring together creative thinking, professional responsibility and the satisfaction of work that represents a client's identity. Gravitas works with businesses of different sizes and in different sectors, but the approach is the same whether the client is a famous London hotel or an independent business in the West Midlands: understand the organisation and deliver something that supports its goals.
When a website takes a business to a new level
One of the greatest rewards of web design, for Gravitas, is seeing what a successful project does for a client. Over nearly 18 years the agency has worked with many customers, and one story shows how far the right digital solution can go. Gravitas was commissioned to build a highly bespoke online tool, tailored to one client's business and its customers. The tool proved so useful that it became an important part of the company's offering, and as the client grew it went on proving its worth, contributing to a period of growth that eventually led to a major acquisition. The work Gravitas began is now set to be rolled out to other businesses around the world.
Darren finds that especially satisfying. It shows web development can go well beyond an attractive online brochure: when a digital solution meets a real business need, it can become part of how a company operates and serves its customers. It is also why Gravitas takes time to understand each client's requirements instead of relying on a standard approach, since the right solution can have an impact far beyond what anyone first imagined. Knowing its work has played a part in a client's growth is one of the measures of success the agency values most.
Supporting Birmingham businesses and the wider community
Gravitas has worked beyond the West Midlands, but its links to the Birmingham business community remain central to its identity. Having grown up in the region and spent part of his career elsewhere, Darren always meant to come back and put down roots, and building the business in Birmingham has made him part of a supportive network of entrepreneurs, organisations and independent companies. He is actively involved with the Greater Birmingham Chamber of Commerce and BNI, both of which let business owners connect, share experiences and support one another. Having faced the challenges of running a small business himself, he values those relationships highly and credits the local business community as one reason he has never felt alone as an entrepreneur.
The agency also puts its skills to work for local causes. It designed and still manages the website for the Royal Sutton Fun Run, an annual event in Sutton Coldfield that raises thousands of pounds for good causes, and it is a strong supporter of local charities and organisations including The Cancer Support Centre in Sutton Coldfield, YMCA Sutton Coldfield and Our Place. For Darren, being part of the community means sharing knowledge, offering encouragement and helping others make better use of their digital presence, as well as working with local businesses.
Talking openly about running a small business
Darren enjoys sharing his experience with other business owners, including as a panellist on the podcast A Funny Thing Called Business, which looks at the trials, successes and everyday realities of running a small business. Nearly two decades of building his own agency have taught him plenty. Starting just before the Global Financial Crisis was an early lesson that businesses do not always grow in ideal conditions, and since then the web design industry has changed at a remarkable pace, with new technologies, shifting customer expectations and constant pressure to keep learning.
Darren accepts that running a small business brings challenges, many of which cannot be predicted. His answer has been to stay adaptable, listen carefully to clients and concentrate on good work even when things get difficult, and supportive customers and a reliable team have made a big difference. Those experiences have deepened his appreciation for the business community around him, and by talking openly about business ownership he hopes to add to the same supportive environment that has helped him. That fits the agency's approachable outlook: success does not mean pretending everything is easy, and some of the most useful conversations come from being honest about what has worked, what has not and what can be learned.
Web Design Business of the Year
Darren was thrilled when he found out Gravitas had won. After almost 18 years of building the business and its client relationships, and adapting to a fast-changing industry, the recognition has brought real pride. For him, the award reflects the care and personal attention that go into working with each customer as well as the websites themselves, and it is encouragement to keep developing the agency and holding to its standards. He sees it as made possible by the team working on client projects and the customers who have trusted the agency with their online presence.
The award also matters to potential new customers. Choosing a web design agency is a big decision, especially when a website is central to bringing in enquiries and building credibility, and Darren hopes the recognition will reassure local businesses that Gravitas cares about the quality of its work and the people it works with. For the agency, it is a reminder that personal service, transparency and strong relationships matter as much in the digital world as technical expertise.
The future of web design and artificial intelligence
Having worked in web design since before founding his agency in 2008, Darren has watched the industry transform, with new technology, changing customer expectations and businesses relying more and more on their online presence. Adapting has always been part of running a digital agency. He is particularly excited about the opportunities and challenges emerging technologies will bring, especially artificial intelligence, which is becoming a growing consideration across marketing and web design and opening new possibilities for how businesses build and manage their digital presence. Rather than seeing it only as a challenge, he is keen to explore how it might benefit both Gravitas and its clients.
In an industry that rarely stands still, continuing to learn is essential, and Gravitas plans to try new tools and approaches while keeping the values that have served it so far. Technology may change how websites are designed and managed, but understanding customers, communicating clearly and providing reliable service remain the basis of strong business relationships.
Thank you to the people behind Gravitas
Darren's first thanks go to his family, whose encouragement and support have helped him through the demands of running an independent business for almost 18 years. He also gives special thanks to Emily and Martin, whose contribution to Gravitas and quality of work he values enormously. He is equally grateful to the network of business owners and professionals who have encouraged him and his team over the years and placed their confidence in the agency through local business organisations, professional connections and long-standing relationships.
Above all he thanks the customers who have made the business possible. From the earliest projects under the Darren Langley Web Design name to the work Gravitas does today, their trust has been central to the company's success, and Darren is clear that he never takes it for granted. Each client who chooses Gravitas puts an important part of their business in the agency's hands, and that is a responsibility he values. After almost 18 years, his message to them is:
“I never take our clients for granted. The trust they put in us means a great deal, and I am thankful for them and their support over the last 18 years and hope we can be of service for many years to come!”
From launching in the shadow of the Global Financial Crisis to designing a website for The Ritz London, Gravitas has built its reputation on the businesses behind the websites, the people who run them and the relationships that help them grow.
